In 1843, Richard Little and his daughter Matilda Conover, organized the first congregation of the St. James African Methodist Episcopal Church, at 102 Atlantic Avenue, Matawan, NJ. The St. James Church cemetery was located directly behind the church.
The current location of this African American burying ground is being researched. There are no known markers.
This Little Family cemetery is mentioned as "The Little Burial Ground" or the "Little Family Grave Yard" in several obituaries.
It is interesting to note that in 1873 the first known burial in the Little Family Cemetery is for Reverend James Simmons, first pastor of St. James AME Church. The first known burial in the St. James Church cemetery was not until ten years later, in 1883.
